With baby #4 pending in just a few weeks it’s hard not to panic over all the things I still need to do before she is born. I want to spend every waking second holding this little button when she is born so I made myself a list of things I want/need to do before her big arrival when I first got pregnant so I can have all the free time in the world when she gets here. I’ll be honest and say that I’ve probably only checked off about 20% of my list so far but at least I got to the fun and important things first. One thing that was important for me was to take a vacation or in our case a stay-cation with the Boss. With the 3 kids we already have we rarely go out on dates or even get the chance to spend a night at home just talking or enjoying each others company because there’s always too much stuff to be done. Hopefully I don’t come off as whiny or ungrateful but this pregnancy has been physically and emotionally hard for me… like I’m embarrassed to even bring up the awful depression or my lack of productivity these past months. I set a lot of really big goals for myself this year and was really hoping to make some big changes and progress at home and with my business but it’s been a struggle just to stay awake or not scream at my kids on most days. I will spare you the ugly details but I will say that I wouldn’t have been able to handle or get through any of it if it wasn’t for my supportive husband. In the past we have had some struggles and now that we are overcoming some of those I am really falling in love with this guy all over again and just feel blessed every single day that he sticks by me. He has held our family and home together while I’ve puked my guts out on the couch and even during my emotional outburst and breakdowns on him almost daily. He has cooked, cleaned, done laundry, dishes, gardening and babysitting on top of taking the kids on outings, playing board games, driving kids to school, bath time, bed time… need I go on? The man did all of that on top of his full time job and bringing me ice cream and frozen drinks for my unsettled tummy. He tells me I am beautiful no matter how many days I wear pajamas in a row or how long it’s been since I’ve showered and he even tries to make me laugh. Through my haze of yuckiness and negativity he has been the uplifting boost of positivity in our home. You can see why I would want to plan something special for this guy right?
I have to say I owe a super HUGE, ginormous, humungo thanks to Hotel Valley Ho for inviting the Boss and I to come and stay for two nights at their brilliant hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona for a mini baby-moon. I had been wanting to go and stay at the newly restored historic hotel for over a year now and they provided the perfect opportunity for us to do so! Hotel Valley Ho was originally built in 1956 and was quite the hot spot for artists and celebrities alike. If you walk the halls of the hotel you will see pictures of some of their famous guests from back in the day. I really love the modern southwestern design of the original hotel!
Fast forward to 2004 when the hotel was purchased and restored by MSR Properties with a vision and determination to bring back the resort’s original mid-century appeal. The hotel reopened in 2005 and added Cafe Zuzu, the OH pool, VH Spa for vitality and a unique event venue. I have to tell you what a dream space this resort is. Even though we were still in Arizona it didn’t feel or LOOK like AZ at all. Staying at the hotel felt like being transported into an old Hollywood film in living color. We got to take a private tour of the hotel and walk through several different rooms and floor plans. I kept thinking throughout the tour that the hotel would be a photographers paradise because of all the unique architecture, landscaping and the luxury interior designs. The room selection was impressive and makes me want to book a stay for just about any reason I can think of. I am definitely thinking I will have to plan a girls weekend first thing after Button is born.
The Boss and I were lucky enough to stay in one of the Tower Suites. You should have seen our faces when we walked in. Pictures don’t do it justice! I literally giggled and said “We get to stay here for 2 nights!”. I couldn’t believe how much space there was. It was like being in an apartment because of the full kitchen, living room, bathroom suite king size bedroom. The Boss was particularly excited about the huge flat screen (it swiveled so you could watch from any room in the hotel. I was thrilled with the ginormous bed and comfy bedding (pregnancy makes sleeping miserable so decent bedding is a must!). We had a room overlooking the OH Pool and the valley and it was just so relaxing to be able to look out the wall to wall windows and admire the view from the chase on our balcony.
The first day we were welcomed with this unexpected platter of deliciousness! I’d say the food lasted about 5 seconds before we devoured the whole of it. I thought it was a very thoughtful gift to welcome us to the resort with refreshments and a kind note. PS. the sundried cherries rocked my world!
After we devoured the platter we headed over to the VH Spa for Vitality where we had booked treatments. The Boss got his first ever professional massage and I got the CoffeeBerry Yoga Facial. I’ve had a few facials in my day but this one rivals them all. I was actually worried about getting a facial because I was still pretty sick and especially sensitive to smells but the Priori product line was actually very light and refreshing and not overbearing in the least bit. I kept asking my technician about every single product because the textures and the smells just kept getting better and better. By the end of my facial I forgot I was pregnant completely. I hadn’t felt that good in a month so I almost teared up a bit. I actually ended up booking a massage for the next day because I was that impressed and didn’t want the happiness to end. Not everyone offers prenatal massage and few are very good at executing an enjoyable prenatal massage but once again I was blown away by the VH Spa staff and services. I signed up for their email subscription so I know when they are offering deals or discounts on future services. I would drive to Scottsdale for some CoffeeBerry yumminess any day!
After our spa treatments we went for a walk in downtown Scottsdale. It was pretty convenient to just walk out of the hotel to find food and entertainment. I love the look and feel of Main St. at night. It’s all lit up romantically and lovely. We stopped and had dinner at The House just down the street from our hotel. It was this beautiful historic home that has been converted into a restaurant and we were able to be seated right away and enjoyed amazing food from one talented chef. The food was sooooo good we even ordered two desserts instead of sharing one like we usually do. Seriously this little stay-cation was already amounting to be everything I wanted and hoped for. Just being able to take our time, have adult conversation and hold hands all evening was exactly the therapy I needed! We took our sweet time walking back to the hotel and admiring all the unique buildings and shops on Main st.
The second day of our stay was just as enjoyable as the first! It started off with a big ol’ fat Belgium waffle from the Zuzu Cafe and the absolute best sun-dried-cherry-butter-spread-topping-deliciousness I ever did taste. I will take one right now actually, please and thank you! I had my prenatal massage while Boss checked some work emails and then we spent the day lounging around at the OH Pool. The pool is salt water and huge! On weekends they have live music around the pool and it’s quite the hang out but I didn’t get pictures of that. One thing I really appreciated was the amount of lounge chairs, cabanas and covered chases. I hate it when there isn’t a spot anywhere and you kind of just have to put your stuff down randomly. We parked it on a big ol’ sunbed with an even bigger umbrella and just did nothing. It was the best time doing nothing I ever had! We went back and forth between wading in the pool and drying out in the sun. Oh! I also LOVED that they have poolside staff. We ordered appetizers and drinks by the pool and didn’t have to move an inch. Thank you convenience! PS. I got my gingham sunglasses from the boutique at the VH Spa, SCORE!
After a long day of relaxing (sheeesh!) we took advantage of our huge bathroom suite and shower to get ready for dinner. I really wanted to try out the dinner menu at ZuZu Cafe. I hadn’t been disappointed yet so I knew dinner was gonna be something epic. We had the sweetest waitress who was telling us some fun stories about different celebrities who have stayed at the hotel including one of my favorites, Snoop Dog (don’t judge me, I just LOVE HIM!). I think my pregnancy mentality kicked in because I pretty much ordered everything. Shrimp cocktail, the best salad EVER (recipe is on the Valley Ho blog here), scallops, filet mignon, and TWO desserts (again). Have I ever told you food is my love language? Love was in the air people! I’ve never been so in love, haha. We ate the salted caramel cheesecake in the restaurant and took the lemon tarte back to our room for me to eat later. I’m pretty sure I dreamed about food that night.
Pretty much wanted to cry when it was time to leave this perfect paradise to go back to our messy house full of kids but I definitely am so thankful we got to have that time together. I wish I could do more for my man to show him how much I appreciate all he does for me but I know he still talks about our stay at the Valley Ho and how much it meant to him. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Hotel Valley Ho or our time we spent there. There’s so much to do and see at the hotel that you will for sure want to plan a few days there. Whether you live here in the valley or are planning a trip to AZ soon I highly recommend making a stop to appreciate this unique little hot spot, even if it’s just to have lunch or get pampered at the spa. If you do decide to visit the hotel though, be sure and call me so I can come too!Back to Blog
