closing up shop [sale]

closing up shop [sale]

I have been procrastinating writing this post for the past 6 months. For the past year now I have had the intention of phasing out my headband collections to focus on my styling career.  The past 4 years have undoubtedly been my most challenging yet rewarding years as a business owner and I owe  my success to all of you. I’ve learned and matured so much through my experiences as a designer and a shop owner and I wouldn’t change the good times or the bad ones for anything. While I have babied every single one of my collections as if they were my own children (they practically were) I have decided that right now I would like to focus on the other aspects of my business and go on headband birth control. I’ve had the intention to close my shop (at least temporarily) for over a year now but my creative womb just couldn’t stop from producing new collections. With a new year quickly approaching I know it’s the right time for me to revert back to my passion for blogging, fashion and styling which all got me into designing headbands in the first place.

I’ve been warned that this announcement may cause a few of you to freak out. Let me take a minute to prevent that from happening. First of all, Whippy Cake is not going anywhere! If anything, prolonging any new collections or products for a while will give me the free time to regain my blog presence and to answer more of your emails and Facebook questions in further detail. Secondly just know that I am not saying I will never open my shop again. I know myself too well to know that I will always experiment in life and try new things but I always come back to the things I love, especially creating. Finally, with the huge time increase I will have when I’m not fulfilling orders anymore I will be able to roll out some new projects I have been working on for the past year including my styling workshops and small business branding and consulting. So although I won’t have tangible headbands for you to buy I will be able to share my trade secrets and styling knowledge with you, and the best part is they will be in video format so you no longer have to come to Arizona for sessions. So, cheer up Charlie, this is all good news!!!

I have to say the thing I look forward to the most is the possibility of gaining normalcy in my life again. One of my main focuses next year will be to make myself more available to my kids who are getting older and to the Boss who has been making dinner and doing dishes on his own for far too long. I try to constantly remind myself that no amount of success can compensate for failure in the home but it would be an outright lie if I said things were perfectly balanced at home. I certainly do not like to admit or entertain the idea that I am failing at anything but I think we all can find comfort in knowing there is always room for improvement (I need more improving than most). That reminds me, the gym has probably missed me these passed four years as well, let’s hope I can reverse some of the rapid aging I have inflicted upon myself. Yikes!

I really want to take this holiday season to rest, regroup and revamp Whippy Cake  but I can’t do that with all this inventory here distracting me so as a huge THANK YOU I have discounted everything in my entire shop from now through the end of Black Friday. Use the promo code “wccloseout” to redeem surprise discounts starting at 30% off and going all the way up to 65% off. That means you have this entire week to shop till your bank account drops and basically buy WC at close out prices. Because this is the end of the line for all my current collections once they have sold out they are gone for good. I will do my best to keep the products in my shop up to date. On Saturday the 24th my online shop will officially close (until further notice) and after that the absolute last chance to buy WC will be at the La Di Da Boutique in Gilbert, AZ November 29th through December 1st. Ok, I guess when I put it like that you all have the right to panic! It may be a while before I decide to put out a new collection….

Again, I just want to say THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU! from the bottom of my heart for your support and goodness. I hope you will hang around to witness the fun things to come!

  10. Sara @ - November 20, 2012

Oh no, first Twinkies and now Whippy Cakes *sob sob sob*

It’s totally understandable though, you have to do what makes you happy and I can’t wait to see where you go next :)

I’ll be selling at La Di Da, I am nervous because it’s my first boutique but I am so glad I will see you in action for your last debut and I’ll get a chance to buy and hoard the last of the Whippy Cakes!

Many good luck wishes to you darling. xoxo

P.S. for some reason all these baby references jumped out at me in the beginning of this post, is this some type of secret message?

    • Becki - November 21, 2012

      LOLOLO Sara! Twinkies = HAHA!

You will definitely have to come find me at La Di Da so we can chat. I will probably only be there for set up and take down and then here and there in between.

I am definitely not pregnant despite my husbands pleading. Maybe next year some time though if I can talk myself into it. haha.

  11. Albion - November 20, 2012

I can now say that I own vintage Whippy! ;) I love every single piece I own and look forward to seeing your new adventures! Best wishes!

  12. Kimberly Cox-Grosso - November 20, 2012

Way to go Becki! I’m really excited for you but mostly for me because now we can have more play time?

  15. Rachel - November 20, 2012

Good for you! What an exciting time! I think it’s important that we step back, evaluate and simplify! I know it has brought me great blessings when I have for those things (often) in my life! Good luck! I look forward for what’s to come!

  16. Rachel - November 20, 2012

    *done those things

  17. Kathy - November 20, 2012

  19. Shelley - November 21, 2012

    I love you.
    Like a lot.

  20. Stephanie {Luxe Boulevard} - November 21, 2012

I think that’s great you made that choice for yourself. Sadly, I had to make the same one. But I am glad I did. I have been able to refocus my life, and it has actually been better for my blog and shop. While it is not back up and running, I have a better perspective of what I want for it. It will be back soon, totally new, and better because I’m better!

I can’t wait to see what you have in store. Now, I’m off to browse your store. Friday is payday!!! Woot!

    Love you, girl!

  21. annie_loo - November 21, 2012

I have never purchased any Whippy Cake, but I think I might just have to now! My favorite part of Whippy Cake is YOU and the BLOG so, as long as those don’t go away I won’t panic!

Good for you for taking time to do what is best for YOU and your family. Saying no is always hard! But when it comes to the time with your family, other things can go. Cause those little people, they are ALL that really matters!

    Going to the shop now!

  22. Tina - November 21, 2012

I just placed an order and therefore missed on on the discount…no fair!! :0) In all seriousness, I will miss your lovely baubles so very much, but good for you for spreading your wings. Fly high!

  23. Emily - November 21, 2012

I second what Annie Loo said! I’m really looking forward to more blogging and styling from you. And you always have to do what’s right for your family. Kudos for being brave enough to take a break! I’ll still be here!

  24. Kristen - November 21, 2012

Your items are beautiful and will be missed, but spending more time with your family is number one. Definitely looking forward to more blogging and styling. I need some styling tips for this flat hair I have. :-) Good luck!

  25. Maye - November 22, 2012

Aww ive tried since yesterday. Im assuming ive missed any whippy cakes :(

  26. Lisa - November 22, 2012

I discovered your site whiie searching for hairstyle ideas, and fell in love with your tutorials. I think your headbands are adorable although I personally do not wear headbands.

If you find yourself with the urge to create, you might want to consider a semi-annual (or quarterly) sale. The benefit is having an outlet to sell your creations without the commitment of running a full time retail business.

Best of luck in your future endeavors.

  27. Rachel Olimb - November 23, 2012

Well…selfishly, this stinks. The only time I feel cool and hip is when I’m sporting a WC…because I know it’s been approved by you! But, Becki, I just love your heart. I love that you’re taking a break right now so that you can be more freed up for your family. You’re beautiful. They are so blessed to have you. Love, love, love!

  28. Shauna - November 26, 2012

As an occasional visitor, I must say that I am bummed to have missed the sale! However, the focus on styling is probably going to make me a regular visitor– those are my FAVORITE posts. Hooray!

  29. Nicole - November 28, 2012

Becky, I know that was a really hard decision for you, as I have made the same one this year but I am so glad I did it. It’s really therapeutic to take a break, re-evaluate and get the business and family back in balance. It’s so hard to be everything to everyone…..You will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly things will fall into place :) See you at La-Di-Da!

  30. Brandy Johnson - December 6, 2012

Oh girl, I so feel you! I am happy/sad for you-know how agonizing it is to set it down and just really make that decision in your heart as well as your head! It’s so hard!!! The break will do you wonders beyond wonders.
I can’t wait until I can work with you as a stylist-you are amazing.
Revive, refresh, renew! So excited to see what’s coming next for you!

  31. Jesica - August 28, 2013

I’m so sad that your headbands aren’t available anymore and I can’t believe I missed that :/ I really enjoy your blog and fb but we have been going thru so much the past year I guess I just missed it. Congratulation on your styling career I know you’ll do awesome!

  32. sheila - April 2, 2014
