Mascara(s) [product review] & [giveaway]

I’ve never been a huge fan of the mascara products out there. I usually love any NEW mascara the first week or so and then the love fades. This is partly due to the new factor and partly because it seems that after a few weeks the brush and the consistency of the mascara diminishes with each use. I feel that way about mascaras sold at the pharmacy as well as the designer mascaras sold at places like Sephora. With that being said there are definitely other factors that set designer mascara above the cheaper brands like Cover Girl. For example the cheaper mascaras aren’t wearable as long as say Smashbox or Mac mascara. The cheaper ones typically get crumbly after 6 hours or smudge and give you coon eyes before the day is out. If I am giving honest advice to someone and they only have a little money to splurge on cosmetics I tell them not to waste it on a designer mascara when they need other products that are more valuable and flawless all around like a great primer, a descent foundation or a high quality shadow pallet. Obviously if you have the cash to spend I will always recommend going with a designer mascara but for those of us who can’t drop some major bones every time we are at the cosmetic counter I say save your dollars when it comes to mascara.

Now that, that is off my chest I can say that I HAVE tried most of the designer mascaras out there in search for a mascara that doesn’t dry up and get lumpy over time (still hunting). I’ve tried some that are good and some that are great but most were just ok. I have two favorites that stand out distinctively above the rest.

Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes Effet Extension

The obvious and fabulous quality of this mascara is of course the sphere applicator brush. I wish ALL mascaras had this same genius applicator. I love the control and the accuracy it gives on every eye no matter the eye shape the eye or length of the lashes. Another great quality this mascara flaunts is how fast it dries. This creates the look of long never ending individual lashes that are just hot!

DiorShow Extase Mascara

Contrary to the Givenchy mascara this mascara has kind of a bulky applicator which sometimes makes the mascara apply sort of clumpy (what’s new right?). Aside from the applicator this mascara packs a punch, a plumping punch that is, which is the exact quality I love about it. It has a built-in plumping treatment that plumps your lashes inside and out making it a perfect mascara to prime your lashes with before other mascaras or it’s build-able if you wanna apply more than one coat using just DiorShow. In the image below I only applied once but you can see that my lashes look fuller compared to the Givenchy image.

I do all these things… except for twitter.. my phone is old school. lol. I recently have been trying Ulta’s Amped lashes volume mascara.. not too bad at all. (I’m also very picky) I particularly am a fan of the nice big plush brushes. Not too popular right now unfortunately. Another mascara I have used and loved is Lancome Amplicils Mascara. I used it years ago and loved it so so much! I however haven’t had the pleasure of being able to afford a $20 mascara since. A friend of mine loves the volumizing lash plumper mascara too.
